With a passion for justice and mentorship, Christopher turned obstacles into motivation, earning degrees in criminal justice while championing reform in the school-to-prison pipeline. Now pursuing his master’s, he’s dedicated to increasing the presence of Black and Latino male educators and guiding at-risk youth toward brighter futures.

Esther Mergerson

Esther Mergerson turned limited exposure into limitless ambition. From excelling at Spelman College to shaping workplace culture at Siemens, she blends psychology and workforce development to drive meaningful change. Now pursuing her master’s, she’s committed to empowering individuals and organizations alike.

Sedrick Black

Sedric Black’s journey of self-discovery and artistic expression has been one of resilience and transformation. Embracing their identity in East Texas, they’ve turned personal growth into powerful music, proving that authenticity and creativity can thrive anywhere.

Lizbeth Chavez

Some people work hard in silence, letting their actions speak for them. Lizbeth Chavez is one of those people. While she would never ask for recognition herself, those who know her see the dedication, resilience, and passion she brings to everything she does.

Martheaus Perkins

Martheaus faced challenges growing up, but his love for writing became both a refuge and a way to unlock new opportunities. In 2024, he achieved a significant milestone when his poetry collection, The Grace of Black Mothers, was accepted for publication—an accomplishment not often reached while still in school.

Elyssa Welch

Meet Elyssa Welch—a 2019 Center High School graduate who turned her passion for art into a thriving career. In partnership with her mother, Wyndi, she co-founded Alchemy Beauty Lounge in Nacogdoches, a studio specializing in permanent makeup and tooth gems.

Lisa Carpenter

Life is often unpredictable, and for many, the road to success is far from linear. For Lisa Carpenter, the journey has been one of immense challenges, personal growth, and unwavering faith. From overcoming addiction to becoming a guiding light for others, her story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of redemption.

Who is eligible for the Success Spotlight?

Anyone from East Texas who has graduated high school and is making progress in their journey—whether through school, work, personal growth, or community involvement.

Do I need to have a degree to apply?

No! Success comes in many forms. Whether you started a business, entered the workforce, earned a certification, or overcame personal challenges, your story is worth sharing.

How will my story be featured?

Selected stories will be highlighted on our website and social media. We may also reach out for a follow-up interview!

Can I nominate someone else?

At this time, we are accepting self-submissions. However, feel free to encourage someone you know to apply!

What kind of photos should I upload?

Photos that represent your journey—graduation pictures, work-related photos, award recognitions, or any image that shows you thriving.
