For Sedric Black, self-discovery and artistic expression have gone hand in hand. A 2012 graduate of Center High School, Black’s journey has been one of resilience, personal growth, and the power of music. Through years of transformation, they have learned that true self-expression is not just about being seen but about embracing one’s energy and purpose.
Black’s passion for music led them to Panola College, where they studied for two years before stepping away from their degree. However, their love for artistic expression never wavered. During the pandemic, they found an opportunity for deep self-reflection, allowing them to channel their emotions and experiences into their music. What began as a personal journey soon became a means of connecting with others, using sound and storytelling to bridge gaps and inspire those around them.
Growing up non-binary and feminine-presenting in East Texas posed its own unique challenges. While external resistance was minimal, Black often felt an internal struggle to fully express themselves. “Just being who I am has been more of an internal challenge,” they share. “I felt suppressed, but being secure in expressing myself here has been transformative.”
Rather than leaving behind the place where they were raised, Black chose to plant roots and embrace their identity unapologetically. They view their presence in East Texas as a statement of resilience, proving that authenticity can thrive anywhere.
With personal growth at the core of their journey, Black is determined to turn their experiences into art. “I have more than enough inspiration fueling me to creatively share my experiences through music,” they say. Every note and lyric serves as a reflection of their journey—one that speaks to self-acceptance, empowerment, and the beauty of living in alignment with one's true self.
Black encourages others to look inward for guidance. “Your energy is everything. You will find the truest version of yourself within! Always learn to trust your inner being, for that is the way to carve out your own destiny.”
They also emphasize that the Black experience is far from monolithic. “As I go deeper into my own personal growth, it’s taken me beyond the physical. I’m here to help bridge gaps that have been intentionally widened over time. From my perspective, I am only part of the whole, which means there’s no separation! There’s power in this knowledge, and I reside in it.”
Sedric Black’s journey is far from over. With a heart full of passion and a voice ready to be heard, they continue to push boundaries through music and self-expression. By staying true to themselves, they are proving that authenticity is not just about self-acceptance—it’s about inspiring others to do the same.
